V.13 RETROSPECTION
Behind the issue
Retrospection explores what happens when we slow down long enough to recognize where we are, rather than constantly looking toward what comes next. Built around the idea of life as a continuous cycle of growth and change, Volume 13 reflects on the people, experiences, rituals, and environments that shape us along the way.
Across four sections, Mundane Magic, Spiritual, Whimsy, and Style Cycle, the issue looks at different ways of reconnecting with ourselves and the world around us. From finding significance in ordinary moments and returning to childhood wonder to exploring personal rituals and the evolution of self-expression, Retrospection reframes reflection as a way of moving forward with greater intention.
MY PART
Making the issue
As Art Director for Retrospection, my work spanned graphic design, photography, and mixed-media image-making. I created the mixed-media cover, spiral issue symbol, launch graphic, social media graphics, and several spreads throughout the publication.
For Style Cycle, I worked with one of the Co-Editors-in-Chief to conceptualize and photograph the shoot in a lighting studio, exploring the tension between different versions of ourselves as our style and identity evolve. I used compositing to place multiple versions of each subject within the same image and photographed additional imagery that I later incorporated into collaged spreads and the issue’s cover. I also translated the shoot into motion through a stop-motion animation created for social media.
Outside of the issue, I photographed a collaborative campaign between Rowdy and Dillard’s featuring members styled in the brand’s shoes and dresses. Shot in a lighting studio, the final images were shared across both brands’ social platforms.
